Batting woes for Dymock

Dymock vs. Fairford – 19th May 2018

A poor batting performance by Dymock meant that a Fairford victory on a beautiful May afternoon was swift and incredibly painful. Captain Ed Buchan lost the toss and as a result, Dymock were put in to bat on a hot cloudless day on a fresh pitch. Opening batting Buchan (6) got Dymock off the mark with a drive for 2 through extra cover and a clip of the legs for 4 in the opening over. Opening partner York Senior (0) was dismissed by Colin Bullock (3/33) diving across the non-striker off his own bowling as the ball caught the outside half of the bat when he tried working the left arm bowler into the onside. Buchan was out in the next over having played all around a straight ball attempting to pull a ball that skidded on off the bowling of Sebastian Jordan (3/37). The openers were joined in the pavilion by Martin Fowke (3), James Field (0), Warren Evans (0) and Matt Windley (2) after a horrendous start leaving the hosts on 40/6. A battling performance by Harry Wise (68) and James Bryon (16*) started a rebuilding process. Wise played a marvellous innings, his sublime timing of the ball evident as his low risk shots got Dymock past a first batting point and within touching distance of a second when he was dismissed caught behind off the bowling of Harvey New (1/33). After drinks the dogged Bryon creamed the ball to the fence as did Jake Wise (7) at the other end. It didn’t take long though for Fairford to clean up the tail with Guy Bailey (3/15) easily dismissing the rest with Matthew Barratt (0) and Tom Streeter (1) being dismissed by the slow bowler. A disappointing batting performance saw Dymock dismissed for 122 on what was the best batting day of the year.

Fairford set about their chase efficiently, punishing anything too straight or wide. Matt Windley (0/27) bowled well in his return to 1st team cricket however, found his inswing on the openers pads too often finding himself being clipped to the boundary regularly. Other opening bowler James Field (2/30) was the pick of the bowlers removing opening batsmen Tom Dutton (19) caught by Martin Fowke at fly slip and Chris Clayton (35) caught Harry Wise. The wickets being gained through an exciting short bowling spell before being removed from the attack for bowling too many waist high full tosses. Jake Wise (0/35) and Matt Barratt (0/14) both bowled tightly, but were found out in each of their last overs spoiling some excellent figures in the context of the match. Despite some tight bowling from Wise and Barratt, Fairford’s Lee Clark (10*) and Chris Hart (47*) saw their side home within 20 overs.

A fighting display in the field by Dymock shows promise for the weeks to come. Although, the batting needs to improve following a disappointing display first innings. Fairford win by 8 wickets.
