It was a dark finish as Dymock won a tight game in their Gloucester Evening League Division 4 opener against Down Hatherley. In his first game as T20 captain Ed Buchan lost the toss as Down Hatherley elected to bowl first. Dymock’s side consisted of brothers Rhys and Aaron Baker making their first T20 appearance as well as George Goulding who was debuting in his first ever mens cricket match.

Dymock’s opening pair Ed Buchan (32) and Dave Williams (55) started brightly with a strong opening partnership before being bowled by opposition captain Will Blackhurst. Wicket keeper Harry Wise (22) kept the pressure on with some excellent running between the wickets before eventually being the third man out bowled by Chris Prinsloo. Dave Williams brought up his 50 by pulling a short ball into the trees before being bowled by opener Toby Brick. Dave’s innings consisted of 50 out of 55 runs in boundaries (4 4’s & 4 6’s). George Goulding (4) scored his first runs in open age cricket with a boundary down to third man before being run out by a direct hit. Warren Evans (5) was trapped in front by Chris Prinsloo, whilst Miles Burret-Newland shepherded the rest of the innings finishing on 3 not out. James Bryon was caught behind off the bowling of Prinsloo for 1. Rhys Baker (3) played some shots but was eventually bowled by opener Luke Brick returning at the death being bowled. Aaron Baker was then run out off the last ball of the innings for 1. An excellent bowling spell by Chris Prinsloo of 4 overs 3/18 kept Dymock to 137/8.

As the Down Hatherley innings started it began getting dark. Opening bowler Jake Wise bowled 3 overs excellently at the beginning of the innings conceding only 16 runs whilst removing opener Chris Prinsloo (6) and number 3 Dave Edwards (0) both bowled. Jake also got his second run out in successive matches when his direct hit saw Down Hatherley’s other opener (21) short of his ground. Aaron Baker opened from the other end bowling 2 tight overs resulting in conceding only 12 runs. James Bryon in his first game of the season had returns of 3 overs 1/7 including a very sharp legside stumping by Harry Wise sending Matt Brown back to the pavilion for 2. Rhys Baker also bowled very well conceding 11 off of his 2 overs. George Goulding removed the innings two highest scorers. First of all bowling Down Hatherley’s number four for 31 before James Bryon took an excellent juggling catch to remove Luke Brick for 39. The last few overs were bowled in the dark; with conditions unfit for the big quicks to return, the captain brought himself on to bowl conceding 10 off his solitary over leaving Down Hatherley around 10 to win off the final over. Warren Evans bowled a great line leaving Down Hatherley 6 required off the final ball. Captain Will Blackhurst (2)trying to clear the ropes ended up running past the ball and Harry Wise whipped off the bails to finish the game. Neil Cresswell was the not out batsman finishing on 14. Miles Burret-Newland also bowled finishing with figures of 3 overs 0/18.

An excellent team performance with contributions from both bat and ball. Jake’s opening spell was excellent and integral in a tight victory. Well done to Rhys, Aaron and George, all contributed and stood up when needed with the bat, ball or in the field.

Dymock win by 5 runs
